Intro to Computers:  Intro to computers will offer an introduction to what a computer is and how to use it.  It is designed for beginners with little or no knowledge of computers.  Topics covered will include an explanation of Windows and files, how to turn on a computer, and how to use the mouse.

MONTHLY MAKERS:  ICE PAINT! JANUARY 20, SATURDAY, 2:00 The cold doesn't bother us! Throw on your lab coat and experiment with creating new colors out of frozen paint. Each color will start off as a frozen ice cube. As you paint the cube will melt and will change your artwork.

GIRLS WHO CODE JANUARY 22, MONDAY, 5:30-6:30 Hackley Public Library is excited to launch a coding club just for girls! We are an official host site for the international Girls Who Code organization. The club is open to students grade 6 and up. In the club, girls will master the basics of coding like loops, variables, functions, and conditionals to name a few. We will meet every Monday evening starting in January through the end of May. Registration is required. Please register online at hackleylibrary.org or by calling 231-722-8014.

Yooper Talk 6:00 pm, Tuesday, January  23 Kathryn Remlinger, author of the forthcoming book Yooper Talk, will be at HPL to talk about her new book. “Yooper Talk is a fresh and significant contribution to understanding regional language and culture in North America. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is historically, geographically and culturally distinct. Struggles over land, labor and language during the past 150 years have shaped the variety of English spoken by resident Yoopers, as well as how they are viewed for outsides. Drawing on sixteen years of fieldwork, including interviews with seventy-five lifelong residents of the UP, Kathryn Remlinger examines how the idea of a unique Yooper dialect emerged. Considering UP English in relation to other regional dialects and their speakers, she looks at local identity, literacy practices, media representations, language attitudes, notions of authenticity, economic factors, tourism, and contact with immigrant and Native American languages. The book also explores how a dialect becomes a recognizable and valuable commodity: Yooper talk (or "Yoopanese") is emblazoned on t-shirts, flags, postcards, coffee mugs, and bumper stickers. Yooper Talk explains linguistic concepts with entertaining examples for general readers and also contributes to interdisciplinary discussions of dialect and identity in sociolinguistics, anthropology, dialectology, and folklore. DRAWING DROIDS JANUARY 27, SATURDAY, 2:00 Professional illustrator Corine Roberts is coming to the library to share her love of drawing and teach us how to draw our favorite Star Wars characters! This program works best for children 6 years old and up. Adults should plan to stay if bringing younger children.

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH INSPIRATION CHOIR AND VICTORY IN PRAISE CHOIR JANUARY 30, TUESDAY, 6:00 Come out to hear some of the best Inspirational/Gospel singing along the Lakeshore. The Holy Trinity Choir, led by Michelle Harris, will grace the Hackley Library stage. Joining them on the program will be Brandon Davis and the Victory in Praise Choir, a community choir comprised of Christians from various denominations from the greater West Michigan area. BLACK HISTORY TRIVIA CONTEST

FEBRUARY 3, SATURDAY, 2:00

So you think you know your Black History? Form a group with your friends--up to 4 per team, 6 teams total--and show your knowledge, competing against other teams.  The most fun you can have with history is back with Mickey Wallace leading the way. Kids compete right along side adults in this game of history and knowledge.

We'll have prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams, and some consolation prizes. Cheer on your friends and family!
