Matthew Ball-Boogie Woogie Pianist
6:00 PM, Monday November 10
The Hackley Public Library is pleased to announce the next performance in its monthly concert series. This month features Matthew Ball, Boogie-Woogie Pianist. The Holland Sentinel says, "Matthew Ball is one of Michigan's premier blues & boogie-woogie pianists!" With a performance history spanning jazz fests to symphony appearances throughout the Mid-west and Canada, as well as recent appearances on NPR's "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition" Matthew has been described as a "rising giant in the field."
Remarkably Ball's start in Jazz only began in 2001 after he attended a hometown boogie-woogie festival. He was so awestruck by the performances he saw that night, he left his career as an attorney to become a blues & boogie-woogie performing artist. With a lot of time, work, and effort over the next few years Ball would reach a breakthrough in 2005 with a career launching performance at the exclusive Arches Piano Stage in Cincinnati where he shared the stage with some of the same musicians that first inspired him to play back in 2001.

Orphan Train
6:00 pm, Tuesday, November 11
Did you know 12,500 orphans from New York City and the Boston area were placed in Michigan from 1854 to 1927. The production company spent a year and a half in research and searching for photos of the Orphan Train Riders in Michigan. They have produced a television documentary about this event in Michigan’s history, depicting in great detail the selection process and being an Orphan Train Rider.

The first Orphan Train Riders (14 boys), arrived in Dowagiac, Michigan on a Sunday morning in late September 1854, traveling on the Michigan Central Railroad. By 1927, forty-three Michigan towns would also receive orphans from the “Baby Train”, as it was sometimes called. Most of the children came from the New York Children’s Aid Society and the New England Home for “Little Wanderers”. Thirty nine percent were girls, and most children were never adopted.

Learn more about the Orphan Train when Program Source International comes to HPL to present a program on this fascinating part of Michigan history.
