Well, I am that typical librarian that Karen Joy Fowler talks about. I have a cat (at one point I had 4 at the same time) and I like mysteries. Agatha Christie, Colin Dexter are two of my favorites.
A few weeks ago a patron came in asking for The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. We didn't own it, but the name was intriguing and while I was looking for a copy for the patron I noticed that it was available through Overdrive as an audiobook. I had to wait a bit for it, but when it was ready I quickly downloaded it and put it on my mp3 player.
The narrator was as entertaining as the story! The story takes place in England during the 1950's. The narrator has a British accent and makes you believe you are hearing Flavia, the main character. And a character she is! She lives in the family manor with her two older sisters and her father, a handy man, and a woman who comes in daily to cook and clean. Flavia has a passion for chemistry and spends much of her time in the lab that an ancestor had set up. She enjoys a good mystery and when a man turns up dead in the cucumber patch there is no stopping her.
The story was very entertaining, so much so that I looked forward to driving around town so I could listen in the car. The plot was pleasantly twisty and turny. I can hardly wait to read the next in the series!
