Happy Unmarried & Single Americans Week

Happy Unmarried & Single Americans Week: From GovGab: "young woman roaming in the fieldDid you know that the third week of September marks the celebration of Unmarried and Single Americans Week (September 19-25th)? I certainly didn’t. The observance was instituted in Ohio by the Buckeye Singles Council to recognize unmarried people and their contributions to society.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, which tracks the nation’s population trends, 96 million or about 43% of all American adults are unmarried. While the word "single" may bring to mind Beyonce singing to all the “Single Ladies”, the reality is that the unmarried population is diverse and can include people who have partners, are widowed, are single parents, the elderly, and even some grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. This observance celebrates all these variations and any in between.

For those who are able, this is the perfect time to develop new hobbies, visit museums, get a few stamps in your passport, or spend some time volunteering. It’s also important to take good care of yourself. Research reports show that marriage has a positive impact on health and well-being; so let’s prove that singles are just as healthy and take proactive steps to take extra care of ourselves too, by:

  • eating healthy foods
  • getting adequate amounts of sleep
  • exercising regularly
  • keeping appointments with your doctors (and maybe a spa day too)

What tips do you have for celebrating “Unmarried and Single Americans Week” this week (and beyond)?

Speaking of celebrating, help us celebrate GovGab.gov’s 3rd birthday by entering the contest to be a guest blogger.
