It’s that time of year again when leaves change colors, sweaters reappear, friends swap soup recipes, and the cool nights are filled with the new fall TV lineup.
As noted previously, I love to point out movies that are based off of books, well the same goes for television shows. Though it seems that TV writers are much more original, there are occasions were television producers find that they can take a book and turn it into a multi-season show.
It goes without saying that vampires are hot right now, and a little show called True Blood has done nothing but added to the phenomenon. I really enjoy hearing people say “I wonder what will happen next to Sookie Stackhouse?” and I think to myself…read the books; Charlaine Harris layed it all out for you in her bestselling series. In any case, True Blood starring Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer just wrapped up its third season and fans are already anticipating the fourth.
Teens (especially girls), also love vampires, as they imagine Edward or Jacob sweeping them off their feet, and TV producers are taking notice. The Vampire Diaries, written by L.J. Smith, adapted by Kevin Williamson (whose name brings up visions of Dawson’s Creek’s Katie Holmes… pre-Tom Cruise) has aready entered its second season on The CW.
Faithful television viewers love vampires, but the one thing they like more is crime. People say crime pays, well if you’re an actor, it pays thousands. We love to watch as witty cops chase down the bad guys, and inevitably always get their man, or sometimes woman.
Bones, a crime drama starring Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, is loosely based off of Kathy Reichs’ character Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan. The hit show, about solving FBI cases using forensic anthropology, is set to enter its sixth on Sept. 23.
The tables have turned in hit show Dexter, where the viewer is actually rooting for the modern day vigilante. Dexter Morgan, played by Emmy award winning Michael C. Hall, is a blood-spatter analyst who doubles as a serial killer whose victims “deserve it”. Showtime’s often bizarre show is a surprising success, due in part to adaptation from Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Dexter kicks off its fifth season on Sept. 26.
Making their debuts this fall season are two highly anticipated shows, $h*! My Dad Says (prounced *bleep* My Dad Says), and Boardwalk Empire. Based off of Justin Halpern’s best-selling book of the same name, the ever entertaining William Shatner will play Ed, a very opinionated father whose struggling adult son moves back in with him. The show has promised to entertain viewers starting Sept.23.
One of the most anticipated shows of the season is brought to us by the hit makers at HBO. Boardwalk Empire is a historical epic about Atlantic City during the prohibition era and stars Steve Buscemi as gangster Enoch “Nucky” Thompson. The first episode, adapted from Nelson Johnson’s book of the same name, directed by the award-winning Martin Scorsese, will premiere this Sunday, Sept. 19.

Book lovers and TV fans prepare the fall television season which kicks off so soon I can already taste my nightly bowl of sherbert. Clear your schedule, and if that’s not possible, set your DVR’s for the following:
- The Vampire Diaries, Thursdays 8/7c on The CW
- Bones, Thursdays 8/7c on FOX
- Dexter, Sundays 9/8c on Showtime
- $h*! My Dad Says, Thursdays, 8:30 on CBS
