Adult Summer Reading

During the second week of the Summer Reading Program, 42 people read 107 books, bringing the total to 89 people having read 220 books.  Way to go!

Book Reviews by participants for Friday, July 9:

Girl Who Married a Lion by Alexander McCall Smith:  Stores masterfully translated from Africa.  Perfectly creepy endings suitable for the fireside.  Might induce vivid imaginations to nightmares.  Read with caution!

Comforts of a muddy Saturday by Alexander McCall Smith:  Isabel Dalhousie investigates possible fraud on a doctor's part as only a new mother/philosopher can.  Excellent armchair travel and vicarious nosiness.  Highly recommended for a day at the beach!

Lost Art of Gratitude by Alexander McCall Smith:  Isabel Dalhousie experiences what many women in corporate society face-plotting, scheming and female bullying.  For a master course in how to deal with this archtype in society-like a lady- read on.  You won't believe the ending.

Inside my heart by Robin McGraw:  Very insightful.  Loved it.

Stones into Schools by Greg Mortenson:  Very good-a follow up to "Three Cups of Tea".  It gives the ongoing work of bringing schools to Pakistan and gives a real life story.

9th Judgment by James Patterson:  Another fine Women's Club crime story.  Patterson continues his excellent story-line.

That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo:  This book is all about family and how our parents' voices live inside of us, even into adulthood.  Funny and enjoyable read.

The Judgment of Caesar by Steven Saylor:  Top notch historical novel of the times of Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, and Ptolemy in Egypt.

The Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes:  Good book on the history of the Great Depression.  It gives good, helpful info on a period forgotten.

Glass Castle by Jeanette Wells:  Captivating story of a child's life of hardship.  Living for a time as nomads and then in a poor coal-mining town, her family's survival is a testament to the indominable spirit needed to survive and overcome all obstacles to a better life.

The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression

It's difficult today to imagine how America survived the Great Depression. Only through the stories of the common people who struggled during that era can we really understand how the nation endured. In "The Forgotten Man," Amity Shlaes offers a striking reinterpretation of the Great Depression. Rejecting the old emphasis on the New Deal, she turns to the neglected and moving stories of individual Americans, and shows how they helped establish the steadfast character we developed as a nation.
Shlaes also traces the mounting agony of the New Dealers themselves as they discovered their errors. She shows how both Presidents Hoover and Roosevelt failed to understand the prosperity of the 1920s and heaped massive burdens on the country that more than offset the benefit of New Deal programs. The real question about the Depression, she argues, is not whether Roosevelt ended it with World War II. It is why the Depression lasted so long. From 1929 to 1940, federal intervention helped to make the Depression great--in part by forgetting the men and women who sought to help one another. "The Forgotten Man," offers a new look at one of the most important periods in our history, allowing us to understand the strength of American character today. …More

The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a penetrating look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette's brilliant father captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who hated anything to do with domesticity. The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered. …More
