Summer is near, and with it the traditional family road trip. Here are some audiobooks for everyone to enjoy together. You don't want sobbing children in the back seat, so I left out such beloved tearjerkers as Charlotte's Web and Because of Winn-Dixie. Since teenagers won't admit they like the same thing as the rest of the car, you can give them the Abhorsen Chronicles by Garth Nix, The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Series, or The Lord of the Rings books by J. R. R. Tolkien. They can use headphones while they pretend not to listen to the stories enjoyed by the rest of you!
Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson - Peter and the Starcatchers Series (Gr. 3 and up) Peter and the Starcatchers; Peter and the Shadow Thieves; Peter and the Secret of Rundoon; Peter and the Sword of Mercy; A charming story that precedes Peter Pan.
Michael Bond - A Bear Called Paddington and More About Paddington (Gr. K and up) Ordinary things become quite extraordinary when a bear called Paddington is involved.
Susan Cooper - The Dark Is Rising Sequence (Gr. 4 and up) Over Sea, Under Stone; The Dark Is Rising; Green Witch; The Grey King; On his 11th birthday, Will discovers he is the last of the Old Ones, immortals who keep the world from domination by the forces of evil.
Christopher Paul Curtis - Bud, Not Buddy (Gr. 4 and up) and The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963 (Gr. 4 and up) These books are unrelated, but I couldn't leave out either one. In 1936 10-year-old Bud is a motherless boy on the run, searching for his father. The Watsons Go to Birmingham is a road trip itself, as the family drives to visit Grandma in Alabama and stumbles into the middle of history.
Roald Dahl - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator (Gr. 3 and up) Join Charlie Bucket as he tours Willy Wonka's factory and then becomes its owner.
James Herriot - The All Creatures Great and Small Series (all ages) All Creatures Great and Small; All Things Bright and Beautiful; All Things Wise and Wonderful; The Lord God Made Them All; Heartwarming and funny true animal stories by a veterinarian.
Madeleine L'Engle - The Time Quartet (Gr. 4 and up) A Wrinkle in Time; A Wind in the Door; Many Waters; A Swiftly Tilting Planet; One stormy night a visitor comes to the Murry house and invites the children on a fantastic journey through a wrinkle in time.
Rick Riordan - Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series (Gr. 5 and up) The Lightning Thief; The Sea of Monsters; The Titan's Curse; The Battle of the Labyrinth; The Last Olympian; 12-year-old Percy discovers the Greek myths are real--and that his father is Poseidon.
