Pool and Spa Safety

Pool and Spa Safety: from GovGab: "Kids in poolWhen I was a little kid I can remember my mom warning me not to swim too close to the drains in pools and not to put my head under the water in hot tubs. She was concerned that my ponytail would get caught and I would drown.
I always thought that was a little morbid. I was just a kid and wanted to have fun.
But my mom had reason to be concerned. The Consumer Product Safety Commission launched the Pool Safely campaign earlier this week in response to the number of injuries and deaths from submersions and entrapments in pools and spas.
The commission released some scary statistics:
From 2005-2007, for children younger than 15, there was an average of 385 drownings in pools and spas each year.
74 percent of those fatalities happened at a home and not in a public pool.
The new campaign will help educate people about the simple steps they can take to make sure their kids stay safe around the water.
Tips include:

  • Make sure drain covers meet compliance standards
  • Install fences with self-latching gates around pools to keep children from falling in
  • Don't let kids swim unsupervised.
  • Learn CPR to be prepared
What tips do you have for keeping you and your kids safe in the pool?"

There are hundreds of books available that coach kids on writing college application essays, improving SAT scores and trying to beat the admissions system. "Admissions Confidential" is a definitive look at why those books don't work. Toor lifts the veil on a process that anxious parents and high school students have never had decoded before. And they may be shocked to find out:
--that elite colleges spend thousands of dollars recruiting students they will never admit
--why some students at the bottom of their high school classes are admitted to top schools when the valedictorians are rejected
--how pricey independent college counselors can hurt an applicant's chances
--why admission to a top school depends on who reads your application
--why the top of the class at a high-performing high school may end up at their second and third choice
Written in engaging first-person and covering the entire admissions process--from recruiting to enrollment--"Admissions Confidential" is a year in the life of a college admissions officer.

Boating Safety

Boating Safety: From GovGab:  "Girl wearing a life jacket looking over the front of a boatAs I mentioned in my blog on Summer Swimming Safety (one of my favorites, because it has it all - drama and a floating, neon-green, baloney sandwich with cheese doodles), I overcame a fear of swimming/water. I eventually became a scuba diver and with that came a lot of time spent on boats.

On one occasion, I was on a “liveaboard” and we dove the Yongala Wreck. We continued sailing far off the coast of Australia, in the Coral Sea. Being that far out and pretty much the only boat around for a great distance is cool, because you know you are diving in some isolated and pristine locations, but it is a little scary. In the back of your mind you pray that nothing goes wrong. You hope that the boat has been well maintained, the crew really knows what they are doing, and that everyone will follow safety protocols, because help is hundreds of miles away.
Any time people are out on the water, safety should be a number one concern. For many people, Memorial Day Weekend marks the beginning of summer and
all around the country people will be heading for the water, which is why this Saturday marks the beginning of (May 22-28). National Safe Boating Week.

Some basic guidelines can make boating a more enjoyable and safer experience. Before you get on the water:

While on the water:

  • Make sure that life jackets are within reach. Children and people who are considered weaker swimmers should wear their life jackets. Read some stories where wearing a life jacket saved a life!
  • Be aware of your surroundings, other boaters, and your speed. Keep an eye out for other boaters in distress, and be willing to help, if it is needed.
  • Avoid alcohol while boating. It can lower your awareness and your ability to respond to a situation.

I hope you all have a great time on the water this summer, and don't forget the sunscreen!"

My Lists in the Lakeland Library Catalog

Starting Thursday!

MY LISTS: This feature in the OPAC will be located within “My Account”. The My Lists feature enables you to keep track of books you are interested in but have not yet checked out or cannot check out at the present time. You are allowed to create multiple lists and can name your own lists. Once lists have been created, the management features include the ability to delete an entire list, delete some records from a list, export a list, and remove duplicate records from a list. When viewing records in a list, the catalog provides a button next to each title to allow placing a hold. Lists are created using the Book Cart feature. As of that morning, a third option will be visible when you view a Book Cart. The button will read “Save to My Lists” with a description next to it that reads, “Save to wish list.”

There are always titles that you may wish to read, but you've reached your 10 hold limit or you don’t have time to read right now. This option gives you an avenue to keep track of things you might want to read in the future with an easy link to placing a hold when you are ready. You will likely find many other uses for the “My List” feature. When you log into you account, the My Lists button will show only if you have already created a list. Once you've created your first list, the button will be available with the other buttons on the My Account page.
